Day 4 & 5 Recap
Rain and low clouds delayed the start of Day 4, but conditions eventually allowed competitors to complete two additional rounds of Pro-Am Canopy Formation.
Day 5 began at sunrise as organizers worked to make up for the previous day’s lost time. The Acrobatic Wingsuit competition wrapped up with its final two rounds, with Turkey Labs claiming the gold medal with 2,099 points. Those Damn Immigrants finished second with 1,837 points, while Noooo Touchy took third with 1,437.
Performance wingsuit competition followed, and competitors completed one round of each task beginning with the distance. Iurii Cartev posted the top Round 1 distance at 3,358 meters, followed by Alexey Galda at 3,305 meters and Amelia Dunaway at 3,079 meters. Galda took the lead in the first round of the time task with 105.2 seconds, followed by Cartev at 100.2 seconds. Marie Clark posted the top women’s time at 88 seconds. In the first round of the speed task, Galda again led the field at 226.3 kilometers per hour. Cartev followed at 217.9 kilometers per hour, with Dunaway close behind at 214.9 kilometers per hour.
The Speed Skydiving competition delivered one of the day’s biggest performances. After losing its first competition day to weather, all 12 competitors completed eight rounds in a single day.
Michael Goodwin finished third with an average speed of 499.67 kilometers per hour after exceeding 500 kilometers per hour in five rounds. Matthew Fry surpassed 500 kilometers per hour in every round to finish second with a 531.42-kilometer-per-hour average.
Niklas Daniel dominated the competition, posting world-record-level speeds in five of his eight rounds. He finished with an average of 535.30 kilometers per hour to win gold and set national and California state records for highest average speed and highest overall average.
Mixed-team recognition was also introduced in Speed Skydiving this year. Brianne Thompson and Daniel won gold with an average of 487.83 kilometers per hour, setting national and state records for highest average speed and highest overall average. Fry and Jessica Twarog earned silver with a 471.68-kilometer-per-hour average.
The two-way Pro-Am teams then battled for the final podium positions, with several teams separated by just one point. Line Junkies won gold with 56 points, followed by Elsinore 18 Jumps and Onward with a total of 54. AF Birdball finished third with 53 points, while AF Wraptors narrowly missed the podium with a total of 52.
The day concluded with a banquet hosted by Skydive Perris, where competitors celebrated with dinner, music and a medal ceremony.
The competition continues with the final performance wingsuit rounds, while Artistic Event teams prepare to begin competition Sept. 9.
